Wood burning stove - wood stove
What do I need to consider before buying a wood burning stove and what is needed for such a wood stove? Here you will find the answers.
Wood burning stoves or wood stoves are becoming more and more popular of late. Frequently you see neatly stacked firewood next to houses, storing fuelwood for the wood burning stove. A wood burning stove does not solely provide heating but is most of the time a real eye catcher and a feature in the room. Who doesn’t want to sit in front of a blazing and cosy fire when it is cold and unpleasant outside?
It is important to consider all the implications before purchasing a wood burning stove
Once you have decided to buy a wood stove, you need to consider the following in the run up to it. It is important to bear in mind that wood burning stoves depending on the design can be very heavy. Especially in old houses for example timbered houses this can lead to problems with the statics of the house. Check with a specialist beforehand if the floors can bear a wood burning stove.
Does the flue fit the chimney?
The next question to answer is if the existing chimney is designed to fit a wood burning stove? Nothing is more annoying than a chimney which does not have a proper pull, leading wads of smoke in the room. Consult your chimney sweep if your chimney can take a wood burning stove. Basic information about the fitting of a wood burning stove to the chimney you can find under stove flue (only in german yet).
Important! The correct position.
The position for the wood burning stove should be chosen carefully, too. What is the distance to inflammable objects (i.e. wall papering, furniture?) Measurement of required spacing to the wood burner can be found under Installing Wood burning stove (only in german yet)
How durable is the flooring? Is a fireproof base plate required? Especially in rented accommodation it is important to find out from your landlord what is and what is not permitted. This applies to paragraph “Does the flue fit the chimney?” too.
How much heat output is required from the wood burner?
Another important aspect is the heat output of the wood burning stove. It is important not to buy a wood burning stove with too high a level of heat output. Usually, a capacity of 2-4 KW is sufficient to heat a standard room. If the heating output is too high in relation to the room, you quickly feel like sitting in a sauna which leads to a perception that the other rooms are too cold and additional heating is required. Hence, the next heating bill will be a very unpleasant surprise bearing in mind that you wanted to save money with the wood burning stove in the first place!
Sufficient space?
Last but not least, do you have enough space to store firewood for the maintenance of your wood burner? It is recommended to have sufficient space for 3-5 cubic meters of fuelwood, if you want to constantly use your wood burning stove during the heating period.
Have fun with your new wood burning stove!
